Navigating Change

Navigating Change by Kendria Johnson
It is such an exciting concept to know that we are going to be change agents in other peoples lives. We can come alongside people and be a helper to them and guide to help them navigate through new territory. Each counselee is different and no two journeys will look the same. Though none are the same they each are there meeting with us to seek out something that they are missing in their life. Many times it takes pain to move a person from the place they are to the place they need to be. It is important that we help the counselee assess the aspects of where they want to end up and how they want to get there. So as a guide we lay out the map for them to choose. Though it is a beautiful process it can be very difficult at times and I hope to use the skills and the techniques I learned in this class to be helpful to my client who is embarking on this new journey.

  1. Dear Kendria,

Thank you for shedding more light on the process of counseling. You mentioned the privilege of being able to walk alongside clients as they analyze where they are coming from and where they want to go. It is true how different that journey will look for various clients, yet the phases generally stay the same. I find solace in understanding at least a general way to conceptualize the “map” of clients’ goals. As we walk alongside clients the temptation to direct clients with our own map may arise. But knowing this ahead of time will help us counsel according to the client’s goals and their own direction.
